Davao
Davao City is the largest city in the Philippines in terms of land area and the most populous city in the country outside of Metro Manila. An independent highly-urbanized on the island of Mindanao with a total land area of 2,443.61 km2 (943.48 sq mi), it has a population of 1,632,991 people based on the 2015 census. This figure also makes it the third-most-populous city in the Philippines and the most populous in Mindanao.
It is the center of Metro Davao, the third most populous metropolitan area in the Philippines (as of 2015 census with a population of 2.5 million, after Metro Manila’s 12.8 million and Metro Cebu’s 2.8 million). The city serves as the main trade, commerce, and industry hub of Mindanao and the regional center of Davao Region. Davao is home to Mount Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines. The city is also nicknamed as the “Durian Capital of the Philippines”.
The large, contiguous lowland areas of Davao City are coastal plains and valleys extending inland as greatly-rising valleys. These areas are found in the eastern part of the city in Paquibato district, which is an extension of vast lowland at the head of Davao Gulf. The other substantial lowland located in the southeastern part of the city along the western coast of the Gulf, and are in the districts of Bunawan, Buhangin, Agdao, Poblacion, Talomo and Toril. These lowland areas are level to nearly land with slopes ranging from 0 to 3 percent. These are generally composed of recent alluvium consisting of clay, silt and some sand and gravel.
Topographically, along the southeast quarter is plain and slightly hilly along the entire coast and uplands north and westward to Calinan, with slopes generally below four to five degrees. The plains and valleys merged gradually into the uplands, and the uplands in turn into the mountains. Although the eastern part of the city is a broad lowland belt, its surface is interspersed by low hill and knobs.
The entire land area of Davao is drained towards the Gulf Davao River and its numerous tributaries are the main drainage system of the city. Davao River originates from Davao Province, flows towards the south meandering along the central part and finally flows eastward emptying into the gulf at the southern periphery of the City Proper. The secondary drainage outlet of the city is the Talomo River which is the drainage outlets of the eastern slopes of Mt. Apo. There are other small rivers and streams that drain the area, but Davao and Talomo Rivers are the important river basins.

Malagos Garden Resort
Apart from being the 4th safest city in the world, Davao is also known as the home the Philippine Eagle Center. The center is the conservation breeding facility of the Philippine Eagle foundation. It is home to a total 35 Philippine Eagles, 18 of which are bred in captivity.
Since it was my flight back to Manila in the evening, I left Iron Inn Lodge early to see the Philippine Eagles up close. I was too excited as seeing the national bird of our country is one among my Philippine travel bucket list. On my way to the center, I suddenly remembered the owl in Residence Inn Zoo Tagaytay as it looked so surreal to me. That owl in fact made me decide that my next trip will be in Davao to see the Philippine Eagles.
The center is located situated in the foothills of Mt.Apo in the municipality Malagos, Baguio District, Davao City.
Philippine Eagle Center
The Center is home to 36 Philippine Eagles, 18 of which are captive-bred. It also houses 10 other species of birds, 4 species of mammals and 2 species of reptiles. Simulating a tropical rain forest environment, the Center offers the visitor a glimpse into the country’s forest ecosystem. Although the exhibits are used primarily to help educate the Filipino people on conservation, the facility is also considered a major tourist attraction in Davao City.
How to get there
The Philippine Eagle Center (PEC) is about an hour drive from the city and can be reached either by private or public transport. Buses going to Calinan depart every 15 minutes from the Annil Terminal located at corner Quirino and San Pedro Extension. Bus fare is at P30. From Calinan, take a pedicab going to the PEC. The ride is about 10 minutes and will cost you P6. Before entering the PEC premises, the Davao City Water District will collect an entrance fee of P5 for adults and P3 for kids. PEC entrance costs P50 for adults and P30 for youth, 18 years old and below. Tour guiding and the use of kiosks are free of charge.
D' Bone Collector Museum
A first in Mindanao, and one-of-its-kind in the Philippines, D’ Bone Collector Museum is a welcome addition to the ever growing number of museums in Davao City. The Museum features a unique collection of over 200 well-preserved skeletons of various animal species from different environments such as the plains, shallow seas and reefs, tropical rainforests, lowlands, and arid regions, including the skeletal remains of two rare sperm whales, one of which is a 41-foot (12.4 meters) long sperm whale which is the largest species of toothed whale and on display at the center of the Museum. The bones of the sperm whales are among the 47 skeletal remains displayed in the world and two of only four in the Philippines.

Isla Malipano
Malipano Island is an island that lies a few hundred meters off the coast of Pearl Farm Beach Resort, and is the site of the famous Malipano Island Villas.
The Malipano Villas are three-storey villas patterned after the Maranao and Samal ethnic design, and whose roofs were exquisitely designed after the traditional Philippine native hat, the “salakot”. The Villas are three-octagonal in shape, and are designed with wide verandas that open to a commanding view of Davao Gulf. The reception areas, guest suites, and the dining area, are all around the cantilevered deck. Four of the Villas are perched on stilts directly above the sea, while the other three Villas are outcropped from the rocks on the beach.
