Avis began in 1946 when Warren Avis opened his first car rental location - "Avis Airlines Rent A Car Systems" at Willow Run Airport, Detroit - the first car rental operation at an airport location. In 1965, Avis formally expanded into the international arena by founding the Europe, Africa and Middle East division (Avis Europe) and achieved leadership in this market just 8 years later in 1973 - a position which Avis has retained ever since. CORPORATE HISTORY G&S Transport Corporation (“G&STC”) was established in April 1972 for the specific purpose of operating the Philippine license of Avis Rent A Car International. G&STC started operations in April 1972 with 6 cars and one station. Today it has a fleet of more than 393 vehicles and 16 stations throughout the country, and is also known by its trade style “Avis Philippines.”
Over the past 38 years of operations, Avis Philippines has operated in several segments of the car rental industry, including the airport transfer service, the car transfer segment (i.e., point-to-point pick-up and drop-off), the car-hire service (less than 24 hours rental), the chauffeur-driven rental market, and the self-driven car rental segment. The last of these is the more commonly known type of rental service throughout the developed world. However, in the Philippines, as in a few other rental markets, the chauffeur-driven service is traditionally more popular, because of difficult local driving conditions and the poor state of roads in these slower-growing economies. Avis International operates over 500,000 vehicles from 4,818 locations in 160 countries. As the Philippine franchisee of Avis International, G&STC is required to adhere strictly to global standards of operation, in conformity with those of Avis International. AVIS is the only car rental company in the country that was granted an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) quality certificate. CORPORATE OVERVIEW Avis Rent A Car System, Inc. and its subsidiaries operate the world’s second largest general-use car rental business, providing business and leisure customers with a wide range of services at more than 1,700 locations in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Latin American/Caribbean region. Avis is recognized as the industry leader in applying new technologies and is one of the world’s top brands for customer loyalty. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cendant Corporation and has marketing agreements with Avis Europe Plc, a separately owned UK-based company owning or franchising an additional 3,050 Avis locations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, QUICK HISTORY Founded in 1946 by Warren Avis (who sold his interest in 1954), Avis was the first company to rent cars from airport locations. The company grew rapidly during the 1950’s through franchised and corporate-owned expansion. In 1963, Avis introduced the award winning “We try harder®” campaign and the tagline remains the company’s rallying cry even today. Ten years later, Avis launched its innovative Wizard reservation system, the company’s cornerstone technology. On the corporate front, Avis changed ownership multiple times in the 70’s and 80’s, becoming employee-owned in 1987. That same year, Avis introduced the Roving Rapid Return, a handheld computer terminal allowing customers to bypass the Avis counter. Two years later, the company launched Avis Cares® to increase renter and employee safety. In 1996, HFS Incorporated acquired Avis and then spun off as a separate public company all but the franchising rights, Wizard system, and reservation operations. Over the next four years, Avis Group Holdings purchased several franchised regions and acquired PHH Vehicle Management and Wright Express. In 2000, the company introduced Avis Interactive, the first Internet-based reporting system in the car rental industry. In March 2001, Cendant purchased all of the outstanding shares of Avis Group Holdings and later that year moved its world headquarters to Parsippany, NJ.
